OPERON

operon

DJ Operon has been a pillar of the drum'n'bass community in Brisbane (Australia) for over five years now. Alongside partner in crime DJ Erther, Operon is responsible for reviving a dead scene for this UK breakbeat sound in his home town. Lack of exposure to the genre and a poor selection of events compelled him to start his own parties which has led on to the highly successful 'Rude Bwoyz Monthly' events, which have now been running each and every month for the last five years. Drum'n'bass in Brisbane is now the strongest its ever been, with scores of talented young djs coming through the ranks and lots of exposure to the sound at many diverse dance events and clubs. His efforts have culminated with top support slots for renowned djs such as LTJ Bukem, Teebee, Aphrodite, Dom & Roland, and Pendulum, as well as a feature mix and interview on major national radio station 'Triple J' back in November.

A keen producer, Operon's name was pushed farther a field of Brisbane when one of his productions 'Regolith' was picked as one of 9 finalists for the 2004 'Connecting Beats' competition run by Nokia. The track featured on a CD alongside artists such as Motive (dsci4) and received Australia wide distribution. More recently, Operon in collaboration with top Brisbane vocalist 'Manta Ray' (My Ninja Lover) has had his production 'Airports' signed with UK label 'Phuzion Records', the 12" promo getting to No.15 on the Juno charts in it's first week! The label is owned and managed by the legendary DJ Nookie, famed for his seminal releases on LTJ Bukem's Good Looking imprint. Nookie has been pushing the tune on his MOS radio show and at many European dnb events to fantastic response!

ATP

atp

Although a relative new-comer to the Drum and Bass scene, Dave Shearer (ATP) is no stranger to music. Getting his roots established in Jazz, playing Sax around Melbourne for a number of years, he maintained a life-long passion for music with soul and feeling. It was through LTJ Bukem that ATP was hooked on DnB. The sound and feel of Jazz and Soul with the groove of the fast break was the catch. From that point onwards ATP slowly became more involved in the scene, taking it all in, without rushing.

Progressing to DJ-ing was inevitable; ATP looking for inspiration from the Djs that focused on the music behind the beats, not just the drums and the bass. He now runs a fortnightly show (NuSoul) on planetdnb.com. Additionally, ATP is a resident at the only weekly Melbourne DnB event “New Grounds”.

Production-wise, ATP is again a newcomer with only a couple of years in the game. With a bit more time up his sleeve now, his musical endeavors are progressing at a faster pace, with more confidence and dexterity. ATP tracks are receiving support across the globe with dj's and producers such as LTJ Bukem, Crissy Cris, Qumulus, DJ Clart, Cybass, Lenzman, Vice Versa and Stunna giving this young producer some well deserved air time.

Dedicating more of his time and resources to drum'n'bass production, expect to hear a more about ATP in the near future.

DJ CLART

dj clart

James (Tan) started playing music in a local rock band (called clothespeg) in Singapore. He began producing in 2000, when he recorded a demo of his band. Moving to the UK in 2002, he began dj'ing with his university Drum n' Bass collective, Presha (now the Rotation Crew), in Guildford, Surrey. At the same time, he started picking up studio tips and played a few parties around London with Kid Du:b for Logical Noise and eventually got into producing his own beats.

In 2004, moving back to Singapore, he hooked up with DMZ and JK and joined the InnerNation Drum n' Bass Collective. Together they've brought down international artists such as dj SS, Influx UK, Evol Intent, Lenzman, and held down a monthly residency at Cocco Latte. Clart also rolls with Twinhed and Mission Control who make up the SETUP collective. Together, they've done regular dnb events around the country, most prominently a monthly at HOME Club and several outings at Bar Baa Black Chic..

Currently in London, Clart helps host the Strictly-Digital.com Atmosphere show on Life FM, every last sunday of the month with dj Qumulus.

Apart from dj'ing, Clart also dabbles in production. So far his beats have been signed to labels, Strictly-Digital.com, Phuzion, Ennex, Blu Saphir and Solé. Clart’s beats are also been supported by the likes of Ltj Bukem, Fabio, Nookie, Qumulus, Jay Rome, Stunna, TKO, Pete Rann, Funktastics, Lenzman, Screamheads, Aaron Jay, Submorphics, Paul T, Sol.Id, Prestige Music Group, d2une crew and various others...

DO THE MATH

Born Daniel Gale Hayes in 1983 to a Dancer and an Actor in North London. His love affair with music started at 7 when he was introduced to the trumpet. As a teenager he was fortunate enough to travel to countries ranging from South Africa to Amsterdam with the Haringey Big Band. It was experiences like these that fuelled a growing passion for musical adventures.

At 17 Daniel joined a punk band called JesseJames. Bright eyed and bushy tailed he set off with his horn supporting bands such as The Pogues, Lit, OPM, Bowling For Soup, Brian Setzer (Stray Cats) and 311. In 2002 JesseJames picked up a record deal and set about releasing 2 EP’s and 2 Albums. It was in these studio sessions that Dan discovered a passion for the creative process of music making. He left JesseJames, brought a home studio, and danbeat was born.

Having spent a year teaching himself to use programmes such as Logic and Pro Tools he got a job engineering in Triggerfish studio’s, pushing buttons for artists such as Mpho Skeef, Fumin, Klashnekoff, Randolph Matthews and Fire Camp. In 2006 danbeat met Mox (Ninja Tune VJ). With a shared passion for soulful electronic music and visuals, they created Shades. As a duo they have already created site-specific work for the Liberty Festival in Trafalgar Square, and a short for the NFT/Hayward. With a performance at Signals film festival under their belt already. They are hoping to take their partnership to new levels in 2007/8.

In 2007 danbeat has produced remixes for a diverse range of artists including The Pinker Tones, Pecker and Tor, played the trumpet for The Pogues, Imogen Heap and Kate Havnevik and made original scores for dance pieces and documentaries featured at/on Sadlers Wells, Stratford Circus, The Discovery Channel and Decibel. Meanwhile releasing his own music on labels such as Wah Wah 45’s, EmCee recordings, Jerona Fruits, DSM and Revolution Recs. In September 2007 danbeat was shortlisted by the Tate modern to have his music showcased in the gallery for a month.

CRIX

crix

Hailing from Italy, Cristina Leone, otherwise know as the artist Crix is a talented newcomer to the world of deep and soulful drum'n'bass. Playing keys and synths from an early age, Cristina decided to consolidate her talents by studying jazz, sound engineering, and music production. In 1992 she began her endeavors with electronic music production through sequencing with Cubase on an Atari ST in a number of acid jazz and reggae bands in Italy and UK.

It was in the year of 1995 that this young producer fell in love with the infectious sounds of drum'n'bass; Metalheadz Sundays at Blue Note, and Gilles Peterson's Monday sessions at Bar Rhumba being her weekly appointments during her stays in the UK capital. Digging deeper into jungle culture Cristina quickly discovered music from groundbreaking labels such as Reinforced and Moving Shadow, as well as attending raves and participating in the jungle way of life.

At the turn of the millennium Cristina started turning her musical creativity towards drum'n'bass and began to develop her production pseudonym 'Crix' . Slowly but surely Cristina's music began to get noticed with dj's on many London radio stations such as Kool and Origin FM spinning Crix dub-plates over the airwaves and at various drum'n'bass events. Her production efforts culminated in 2008 with the release of her tune 'I don't wanna lose you' on drum'n'bass pioneer Nookie's Phuzion Records.

At present Crix is advancing her career through a number of collaborations with successful producers, Djs and Mcs such as Operon, Data, MCFats, Chef, Emtek and Leader1.

"You can't turn back from dnb,it's a pure love.No other style has so many hues, for anyone, anytime. Roots and Future; It's the soul's safest island."
